By Blood is the result of four years of intensive
collaboration between Steur and Hatfield. Their shared passion for the
Maori culture resulted in beautiful photographs that not only uncover
the soul of Ta Moko, but also the pride of a clan intimately revealing
the artistry and essence of Gordon's designs. The body became the
« wood » for the artist and a
symbol of the history of the clan and culture. This book reflects the
renaissance of the Maori culture through the meaning of Ta Moko.

Le
tatouage, marque de l'appartenance à un groupe et symbole du
rang dans la société, est commun à
toute la vaste Polynésie, mais à Aotearoa [la
Nouvelle-Zélande] les Maori lui ont donné une
esthétique unique en s'inspirant des plantes, notamment les
fougères des forêts de ce pays.
Voici
quelques mois, un magnifique livre a été
publié. Il est l'œuvre commune du tatoueur maori
Gordon Toi Hatfield et de la photographe hollandaise Patricia Steur et
dévoile bien le réveil culturel actuel du peuple
maori.
