This
is not in any sense a book
« about » Skellig
Michael. It does not set out to give any comprehensive picture of the
island, its wildlife or its historical background. It is the creative
reaction of a dozen or so artists to their visit there.

mer, le vent et le roc abrupt se conjuguent pour faire de Skellig
Michael un rêve hors de portée pour
beaucoup ; en
témoignent deux des poèmes de l'anthologie, le
premier de
Tomás Rua Ó Súilleabháin
(ici traduit en
anglais par Derek Mahon), le second de Derek Mahon
précisément —
« Strong winds continue,
so no trip this time » (At the Butler Arms, p. 186).
De fait, Skellig Michael n'a connu, des siècles durant, que
de
très rares
« habitants » : des fous
de Dieu qui y ont érigé quelques huttes de pierre
suspendues aux flans de parois vertigineuses. Plus tard,
l'érection d'un phare a rendu nécessaire une
présence humaine exposée à des
conditions de vie
à peine moins précaires. Plus tard encore, de
rares
visiteurs ont eu, temps permettant, le privilège d'y
effectuer
de brefs séjours.
C'est à cette
dernière
catégorie qu'appartiennent les poètes
convoqués,
entre deux coups de vent, par Paddy Bushe pour une retraite de quelques
heures, quelques jours au plus
— véritable saut hors
du temps et du monde. L'anthologie réunit les textes
suscités par cette expérience sans
équivalent,
dans un lieu dont le rayonnement n'a pourtant cessé au fil
des
siècles d'éclairer la poésie et, plus
largement,
la culture irlandaise.

DESCRIPTION :
Skellig Michael (in Irish, Sceilg Mhichil, or Michael's rock) is the
larger of the two Skellig islands, situated in the Atlantic Ocean some
12 km off the coast of south-west Kerry. For some 700 years
after
its foundation in the 6th century, the monastery (a climb of 670 steps
and almost 230 metres above sea level) was home to a vibrant monastic
community, one of the earliest of such settlements in Ireland. In 1996
it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is today maintained
by the Office of Public Works.
Despite
its proximity to the
mainland, however, Skellig Michael is not well known, not least due to
the significant challenges it presents to the casual visitor. And yet
its stark beauty holds a fascination for many. For Voices at the World's Edge,
Dublin-born poet Paddy Bushe, long since living within sight of the
Skelligs, invited some of Ireland's best-known poets to travel with him
to Skellig Michael, to spend the night among bee-hive huts, puffins and
gannets, and to write of the experience at the one-time edge of the
world.
Marie
Heaney provides the Foreword to an extraordinary
anthology of poetry and prose that is part travel writing, part
meditative day-book ; part natural history and part response
to
the history of faith on this sea-encircled pinnacle of rock.
World-famous photographer John Minihan, ever a friend to writers,
records both his own journey and those of a number of his companions.
