MUIRIS MAC CONGHAIL : […]
Our little cluster of islands,
with the Great Blasket sitting in the middle, is worth visiting
for [many] reasons. Here you can contemplate Ireland or even
turn your back to her an to the busy world for a while and gaze
towards America or up at the vast expanse of the Atlantic sky
for hours. But the special attribute of the Great Blasket is
the literary legacy left by its people : there is a small
but important « library » of books written
by the Islanders in their native Irish. Some of these books are
now available also in English, German, French, Czech and Swedish.
Not all of these books are of equal merit, but taken together
they represent an extraordinary collective literary achievement.

of Ireland come to produce these books in a language that was
hovering even then between life and death ?
[…]
This book tells the story of
how the village in the centre of that cluster of islands came
to produce a library of books. The island community was just
on the verge of change from a traditional oral culture to a modern
literate one. The community, as if they were aware of their culture
was waning, began to record aspects of that culture and express
themselves creatively in writing.
