Russell's decision to leave Paris and to live on
Belle-Ile was the turning point in his career as an artist. But whilst
initially the island surroundings proved a fruitful source of imagery,
as he wrote to Rodin in october 1888 « there
are so many lovely motifs here — I am so happy dear M. Rodin
that I had the courage to leave
Paris … » 1, familiarity led to laziness.
Themes and motives were repeated and canvases were
worked and reworked. Occasionally in some unfinished works such as Mer
agitée : tempête Belle-Ile, Russell
verged on abstraction, but the overwhelming trend of
his art in the later years at Belle-Ile 2 was in the direction of the conservatism
of his early english years.
