JEAN-YVES RUAUX : Dalmau était un lieutenant de l'armée républicaine espagnole. En 1939, il s'engage dans l'armée française, se bat à la frontière du Luxembourg. Il est ensuite interné comme étranger avant d'être acheminé vers le mur de l'Atlantique. Il participera d'abord à la construction d'une base sous-marine à La Pallice avant d'embarquer à Saint-Malo pour Jersey [et le camp d'Aurigny].

La couverture de son ouvrage montre des hommes émaciés que des soldats menacent de leur fouet. […] Son récit a parfois le ton du conteur. […] Pourtant, confronter les témoignages revient à établir la réalité d'un véritable enfer avec plusieurs cercles concentriques et l'institution graduelle de l'horreur.

The news of any heavy bombing of German towns was the occasion for a “ dance ”.
