Town of Chilmark / John Maloney. - West Tisbury (Mass.) : Indian Hill press, 1995. - 12 p.
NOTE DE L'ÉDITEUR : When the Town of Chilmark on the Island of Martha's Vineyard, turned 300 years old, the Chilmark Cultural Council asked poet and stone mason John Maloney to write a poem cycle to mark the occasion.

John's response was this collection of eight poems, portions of which were set to music and performed at the town's anniversary events.

We wanted this book to reflect both the formality of the ceremonial poetry and the antiquity of the town. The choice of a traditional typeface and historical ornaments was deliberate, evoking period typography. The French craft-paper wrappers, printed with blue and red linotype ornaments, are consciously reminiscent of the lining one might find in an old whaling-captain's chest.

Town of Chilmark was set in Linotype Caslon Old Face and printed on a hand-fed cylinder press. The text is acid-free Mohawk Superfine. The edition is limited to 100 copies, numbered and signed by the author.
EXTRAIT
Waiting for Whales

So wide a dream, so
warm and dry the hand
of my father holding

my young girl hand.
How long did we stand,
staring at those waves?

Do you see the whale,
dear, do you see it right
there—a humpback whale!

Yes, yes, I do, let’s
stay here forever and
see if we can see them.
