NOTE DE L'ÉDITEUR : The rugged beauty of Monhegan Island has
attracted artists since the 1850s, but it also caught the eye
of photographers, who began recording their impressions of island
life in the 1890s. One of the first — and most gifted —
was Eric Hudson.
Born in Boston in 1862, Hudson emerged
as a talented painter in his twenties. Like many late-nineteenth-century
artists, he developed a keen interest in photography, both as
a means of capturing images upon which to base canvases and for
its own aesthetic value. The ruling passion of Hudson's art was
the sea, which led him to sail the New England coast in the 1880s
and '90s in search of subject matter for paintings and photographs.

While sailing to Mount Desert in 1897,
Hudson discovered Monhegan and was so captivated by the island
that he returned in 1898 to build a cottage, which served as
his summer residence and studio until his death in 1932. Seeking
to gain an intimate knowledge of his newfound home, Hudson energetically
pursued photographing every aspect of Monhegan in the late 1890s :
fishermen engaged in each phase of their work, the weather-beaten
fish houses on the waterfront, the village homes and summer boardinghouses,
the majestic cliffs of the outer island, and the busy harbor. |
