Les racines de Dara Ó Conaola sont aux îles d'Aran, à l'entrée de la baie de Galway. Il est né sur Inis Meáin (Inishmaan), d'une famille qui comptait de célèbres conteurs, et vit aujourd'hui sur l'île voisine d'Inis Oírr (Inisheer).

Depuis une vingtaine d'années, Dara Ó Conaola a publié de nombreux recueils : contes et nouvelles, poésie, histoire locale et littérature pour la jeunesse ; plusieurs d'entre eux ont été traduits en anglais, et certains dans différentes langues européennes ; tous accordent une large place au merveilleux et à l'imagination et témoignent d'une remarquable adaptation du fond traditionnel de l'ouest irlandais aux exigences de l'expression littéraire contemporaine.

Dara Ó Conaola est également l'auteur de textes de chansons pour sa fille, Lasairfhíona Ní Chonaola, spécialiste du répertoire traditionnel des îles d'Aran.
