NOTE DE L'ÉDITEUR
: Among Marshallese the ri-bwebwenato (storyteller) is well known and
respected, a living repository and transmitter of traditional history
and culture. Here are ninety folktales and stories of historical
events, collected and translated into English during the third quarter
of the twentieth century. Many are presented in the original language
and are amplified by extensive commentary.
❙ Jack A. Tobin
began this study half a century ago, when he arrived at Arno Atoll as
part of an anthropological expedition. For much of the next three
decades he lived in the islands, learning the language and culture, and
to this day remains in close contact with people and life in the
Marshalls.
